Flying Camel Lesson To Get Started

Product Description

Tugba begins this 2 minute and 41 second video lesson by stressing that the flying camel should begin from a nice curvy outside edge that leads to the toe pick. She then demonstrates a practice exercise in which she begins with her feet in the “T” position, her left arm in front and right arm out to the side with her body bent slightly forward. She then bends the knee of her front (skating) leg, keeping her back and back (free) leg straight and behind rather than off to the side. She then glides forward on a deep outside edge and as her turn tightens she shifts onto her toe pick and performs a couple of revolutions on her pick. Make sure to keep the knee of the skating leg bent throughout this exercise so that you do a spin and not a 3-turn.

Next Tugba has a demonstrator perform a complete flying camel and points out how he jumps straight off his toe pick. She then asks her students to look down and study the tracings the demonstrator has left in the ice. She points out a nice curve ending in a divot where the demonstrator shifted before jumping straight into the air and completing the camel spin on the opposite side..

Tugba notes that a common mistake skaters make is to get onto their toe picks and ten go back and perform a 3-turn before then completing the jump. This is called a flying Salchow and is not what we want to accomplish here.
